I'm not sure if this has been discussed yet, maybe yes or no.

Anyway I noticed recently that Warbeck puts his head down before John shoots him. It looks like it might or might not be a nod to kill him. Was he giving John the okay to do it?

He nods because the British officer asked him if John was the "terrorist they were looking for". Warbeck nods to signify that "yes. It is him".

I'm talking about after that before John shoots him. It looks like he nods again.

I'll have to see that again. To me I just noticed him smiling. I guess he didnt think his old friend would shoot him.

I think yes.

Later, when Mallory is in a similar situation with Viellga, Mallory resists the temptation to execute a traitor, forcing Viellga to take responsibility for his own judgement.

I always thought he was giving Coburn the encouragement to shoot, sort of saying "It's OK, shoot me." without speaking. This leaves Coburn traumatised for the remainder of his life.

Slightly like Noodles in OUATIA, in a funny kinda way. It's as though that film is seen through the eys of Warbeck's character, if Coburn hadn't killed him, and had been shot by the police first. Unfortunatly for Coburn, Warbeck doesn't come striding out of the flames at the end of the movie still alive, and he finally kills himself.

I take it you are also referring to the fact that Max offers Noodles the chance to kill him for his betrayals, and Max takes a pass. Good point, I hadn't thought about the fact that the same situation arises in both films. It's interesting, given the fact that Leone frequently dealt with revenge plots, that in 2 of his films the potential avenger in effect says, "Revenge is not the way."

I think Warbeck nods again because it's like he's saying " Thanks old buddy for killing my captors. " Notice he smiles when he nods, so it's obvious that he doesn't think Coburn will kill him.

Never saw it this way, Warbeck looks shocked when he gets plugged in the head.

In the head?

That was a bullet hole? I thought he was shot and the blood trickled out of his wound.

I must watch that scene again.

Warbeck invites his own death to expiate his act of betrayal.

huh? I'm lost Peace. He was shot in the head by John, the wound you mention is the bullet hole. Notice he shot him in the mole area but before that close up of Warbeck's character still had the mole on his forehead.

Oh yeah, it was a mole not a wound.

But anyway, I still think he was shot in the chest or guts and the blood came out of his mole. Notice when he gets hit his lower body is sent back a bit. If he had been hit in the head, his head would have jolted back.
