Still stunned by this film....the performances..the score by Leonard Bernstein...the loveliness of Eva Marie Saint in her film debut...the imagery...the unforgettable ending sequence......& to think...Sinatra almost starred in this...was signed to do Terry Malloy..& got dropped (for which he sued for breach of contract) when Brando became available. Good move.

On the Waterfront (1954) - 7.5/10

Despite the lack of 'fireworks', so to speak, the performances as well as the plucky portrayal of the life and times of the folks on the dockside make it worth your time.

Poor Dust Devil

It must be miserable not being able to enjoy OTW as a great movie  Tongue

Sometimes you can "bare" a burden, but in this case you "bear" it ;-)

Compared to its reputation a disappointing film. One of the first which comes to my mind when I hear or read the "overrated classic" phrase. 6/10

I liked it less on a second viewing. It feels like theatre with all these meaningful dialogues and over-acting. Brando was pretty good and I liked the photography.

Cheesy
Brando looks terrible on this poster.

I never saw the film. I remember Claude Chabrol completely mocking it in a radio interview. He thought everything was childish and ridiculous. He also said that everytime Brando  turns his back to the camera, the hands in his coat, it looks like he's peeing (which is probably the worst argument I've ever heard against a movie, but it's fun to ear that from a famous director).
