A couple of nights ago I saw the new film by Mexican director Guillermo del Toro (who also wrote it's screenplay), EL LABERINTO DEL FAUNO and was quite blown away by it. It's magical, enchanting, disturbing even depressing and melancholy, but unmissable. See it on on as big a screen as you can, in a cinema with a good sound system, as Martín Hernández's sound design is quite superb.

First time I saw a still from the film, I suspected I was going to be thriled by it, so I deliberately tried to avoid seeing any clips or hearing any info, so I won't say much about it here, other than to strongly reccomend it. This still was so good it was a perfect piece of marketing in it's self, I just thought "What the hell is that?" and "I've got to see it!"

One thing I will say which a lot of people who've viewed it seem to be confused about is that it is NOT set in the Spanish Civil War. It's set in June 1944, some 5 years after Franco's victory. As such it works both as a mixture of fairytales and melodrama, but also as an allegory of post Civil War Spanish history. The only things I can compare it too are Jan Svankmajer's disturbing animations and Julio Medem's magical realist VACAS, which was set in near idenical Basque forrest locations.

The attention to detail in both the early Franco Fascist "reality" and the "fantasy" world of the child is exquisite, the cast are incredible, especially Ivana Baquero who at just 12 years old has to carry the film, and Sergi López as it's frightningly ruthless villain. The cinematography is faultless, and it's a real thrill to see the sort of FX's pioneered for THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy used in a tale aimed strictly at adults (and such is the intensity of cruelty and violence that it really is not for children). A fantastic new arrival to the world of visionary cinema. Don't miss it.

So it's in CR, on a film festival that takes place next week. We decided to go there with my classmates today, but I looked on the site and it's sold out... let's hope they managed to take the last tickets - or that it will come to other cinemas.

I'm sure i saw a dvd review on teletext last week ,so in the UK at least it must now be available hopefully in the form of an extended edition as this movie sounds great.
