So we must celebrate not what Leone conceived and executed but what the foreign distributors decided to make of it. Well, hope you'll have a ball.

Leone agreed to the cuts.

That doesn't mean he was happy with it.

No, but it doesn't mean he was unhappy either.

It just means that if he wanted to have the movie distributed abroad he had to cut. Had he any other choice?

But the cuts aren't arbitrary. Leone selected them himself, and except for the Confederate fort scene, excised things that didn't really matter. The fact that GBU became the big hit that it was/is shows that Leone really knew what he was doing.

We can even assume he was grateful to the distributors for having taught him a lesson about movie editing. A pity he soon forgot the lesson, though. And a pity that in Italy we always saw a longer version and that he, when introducing the movie the first time it was televised, didn't think about doing the cuts on that copy too.

To me it shows that the film is so good that resisted the cuts. He preferred doing that job himself instead of delegating the task to a butcher.

Sorry, this is the thread celebrating the 40th anniversary of BBC. GBU's 40th isn't for a while yet. According to Frayling, the U.S. premier was January 1968. Did the English language version play anywhere else (like in the UK) earlier than that?

GBU's 40th was 12-23-06, because that was 40 years from when it premiered in Italy. That's when it was originally released, so that's the date we should all celebrate and cherish. Nothing else.

So Happy B-day GBU from me too.  Tongue

Sorry, BBC and GBU are two different films.

You bet. Jupa was simply referring to the one which must be hailed.

Why can't we celebrate both?

Anyone can celebrate (whatever this may mean) whatever he wants. If somebody wants to celebrate 3 and 1\2 Samurai, let him. I think it is right to celebrate only the 7. But if somebody wants it another way, I don't care. Let's just keep things clear and not muddle things up.
