Well, on a whim I went to the homepage of Roger Ebert, my personal favorite film critic, and look what I came across!

http://www.suntimes.com/ebert/greatmovies/goodbadugly.html

Given his praise later on in the article of OUATITW and OUATITA, perhaps he'll do those later?   Huh

Oh well.  Me and Ebert almost always agree (our only major disagreement being our opinions on "Gods & Generals" - I love it, he hates it), so this shouldn't have been to much of a surprise.  I didn't think Ebert would review a Leone film, probably because, as he said:

Quote
Looking up my old review, I see I described a four-star movie but only gave it three stars, perhaps because it was a "spaghetti Western" and so could not be art.

I dunno, I thought this was worth a look.  Wink

whats ebert's problem w/ "gods & generals?"
i was just thinking of old stonewall the other day.
i wasn't aware a film about him had been made.
i remember a battle in which jackson's army took a heavy amount of casualties. after surveying the situation
jackson  said "GOD HAS BEEN GOOD TO US THIS DAY"

I think he disliked for all the usual liberal whiny reasons - it's too long, it "whitewashes" slavery (I SHOULD point out that most of the South's slaves were in the DEEP SOUTH, i.e. South Carolina, Texas, Georgia, etc.), the dialogue is "stilted" (it's just fine IMO given the time period) . . . that stuff.  And, of course, since they quote the Bible a lot.  Undecided

I'm going to agree that this review comes as a surprise, because Ebert rarely speaks of Leone, so like many of you I was surprised. Nonetheless, it was a great review, better then I expected.

Good article.

Unusual. American film critics usually don't like Morricone and his "foreign" vision of western and american history.
