Film buffs have been treated recently with some great quality (I'm not talking MST3K movie fodder) Sci Fi. Recently we had the lavish and deluxe Forbidden Planet set out which also included the film The Invisible Boy and a whole host of extras including the great doco Watch the Skies!: Science Fiction, the 1950s and Us from TCM.

We've also got this great looking boxset coming from the new Criterion line called Monsters and Madmen which contains 4 films;

The Atomic Submarine

Corridors of Blood

First Man Into Space

The Haunted Strangler

and a whole host of extras

And we also have the great news that a new version of the classic RKO Sci Fi film The Thing From Another World is coming out in R2 land in a supposedly better tranfer then the R1 version and in a 2 disc edition with at least a confirmed commentary track by John Carpenter. Now Universals track record of releasing RKO films in the UK is poor quality wise but lets hope htis classic gets the respect and treatment it deserves, especially because it gave birth to the excellent remake from Mr Carpenter.

The Day the Earth Stood Still, released in a great version by Fox Studio Classics on both sides of the pond is another great 50's sci fi classic as well as This Island Earth which despite being quite succesfuly MSTied is still an entertaining film.

What other great 50's Sci Fi movies do you enjoy?

No problem, I wasn't sure if you read it or not and thought I'd toss it out there again. Great news on THE THING R2.  :) I'll definitely "KEEP WATCHING THE SKIES" for news on its impending release.  :)

I haven't seen any of the films in that set but they all come highly recomended and Criterion have worked their magic on them. I've ordered a huge load of DVD's to be delivered from Amazon probably around March.
