Has anyone seen this newly remastered Japanese DVD? It was released just before Christmas last year.

Although I had an extremely hectic schedule while I was in Japan, I got three minutes to browse a local video store. I rushed into the store and asked a young clerk trying to catch my breath, "Do you have any macaroni?" The clerk said "This is not a supermarket, sir." "I mean macaroni westerns!" I said. But he still didn't understand (young and ignorant!). When I mentioned Sergio Leone, this is what he pointed at. I said to myself, "My God, what is this!"

It's a three disc box set (more discs than German DVD!). And it's 100 minutes (longer than German DVD!). And more supplements than German DVD!

What is the extra footage? I tell you when I see it.  Grin

I was just wondering if any of you have seen this.

Hoorah!

That looks awesome, but knowing Japanese DVD's it's probably... pricey.

Okay, folks, here's some data of this new Japanese DVD.

Feature: The master is NTSC digital new master restored by MGM.
Audio: Dolby 5.1ch. DTS5. 1ch, 2ch stereo,
Commentary by Christopher Frayling

Supplements: (Most of them seem to be the same as the German DVD)

Supplement Disc 1
1. A New Kind of Hero (23min) with Christoper Frayling
2. A Few Weeks in Spain (9min) with Eastwood talking about Leone and behind the scene episodes
3. Tre Voci (11min) with Alberto Grimaldi, Sergio Donati and Mickey Knox talking about Leone and FOD
4. Not Ready for Primetime (6min) with Monte Helman talking about the added prologue for TV
5. The Network Prologue (8min), the notorious prologue sequence
6. Restoration Italian Style (6min) with MGM technical director talking about the restoration process
7. Location Comparisons (5min) of still photos of "then" and "now"

Supplement Disc 2
"Sergio Leone: Les Westerns" (51min), a documentary produced by French TV Studio CANAL+ in 1997. With Eastwood, Cardinale, Wallach, Carlo Simi, Henry Fonda, Tonino Delli Colli, Morricone and Leone.

Sorry falks, I have not seen the feature yet. I'm waiting for my region free DVD player to arrive (I don't want to see this DVD on the computer screen). I'll report on the feature as soon as I see it.

Sanjuro, does the film disc come with an Italian audio option? Otherwise, the only extra extra you get seems to be the third disc documentary.

It has English and Japanese audio (Japanese dubbing is fun to listen). But I have to remind you, this is 100 minutes while the German DVD is 97 minuntes.

The French documentary has French narration with Japanese subtitles. Unless you understand French or Japanese, it might be difficult to follow. Iterviews with American actors are, of course, in English.
