Have no idea. My region free DVD player arrives in few days. I'll keep it surprise to myself until then.

It has English and Japanese audio (Japanese dubbing is fun to listen). But I have to remind you, this is 100 minutes while the German DVD is 97 minuntes.

The reason for this has nothing to do with cuts, it has to do with the difference between PAL and NTSC. PAL is slightly faster than NTSC, so however long something is on NTSC, it will be some 5% shorter on PAL.

Not quite sure. However, the box does say, it has an extra footage added.

I believe the extra footage is the original prologue version done by Sergio Leone and with Clint actually in it. The original film  was discarded but recently turned up in japan somewhere and they have the rights to it. Much better than the American copy version.....

At last, I saw this Japanese SE FOD DVD last night.

Conclusion: There's nothing I haven't seen before. What's the extra footage then, you may ask.  The box cover says "The complete edition. The first time release in Japan with the restored violence scene." I checked the previous release of the Japanese DVD. It was released in 2002 and the running time was 96 minutes. 4 minutes shorter than this SE. What I found out was that, besides the beating scene of Joe, various shots that were considered violent were not included in the previous release. Shocking, isn't it? So this is the first time the poor Japanese viewers see the complete edition on DVD (when the film was released, it was complete).

According to John Kirk, MGM Technical Director, who restored FOD, there are no extra scenes of FOD. If so, the reason the running time of this Japanese SE is longer than the European SEs (UK and German), is explained by the speed difference between PAL and NTSC (yes, Silenzio, you were right).

Still, this DVD has a very sharp crisp image and more vivid color than R1 DVD. And you will love Dolby 5.1ch surround. Even if you don't have a surround system, you can enjoy the stereo effect with English audio. Sounds of gun shots and running horses are so clear and real. Needless to say Morricone's music sounds more beautiful than ever. I'd llike to thank the MGM technical department for their miraculous work.

Also, one of the featurettes, "Sergio Leone: Les Westerns" is noteworthy. It has a lot more interviews with Leone than UK documentary "Once Upon a Time: Sergio Leone." If you have a chance, try to see this French documentary.

Thanks for the summary Sanjuro. If it's the same 5.1 upmixes that were on the MGM DVD I have to disagree with you I am afraid as I thought it was a terrible mixing job. Then again I am a bit of a purist when it comes to things like this so when the mono is available I always go for the original (director approved) mono rather then some poor new foly redub hack job that MGM seemed to pull out for the dollars trilogy and Dynamite, Must admit the music does have a wider scope in the 5.1 and DTS then the mono but the job done on the German releases of the mono were excellent and to my eyes sounded so much more pleasing then the upmixes.

I'm a bit skeptical about the stereo or surround sound remixed from original mono also. In fact, I'm not so keen about GBU's remix. But the Dolby 5.1ch, DTS5.1ch, 2ch stereo of this SE is fairly well done in my opinion. Both sound effects and music are so natural and clear. It's way more pleasing than the soundtrack with noise on R1 DVD released in the US in 1999.

doesn't happen as often as you would like.

What's with the hoopla (Hoo ha?) about the violence? Isn't Japan totally comfortable with violence in films?

Japanese government is more tolerant toward violence than sex (it should be the other way around).

The reason Japanese had to put up with the chopped up FOD DVD for 4 years is because of the copyright issue. Kurosawa Production owns the copyright of FOD in Korea, Taiwan and Japan since they won the law suit. In 2002, a Japanese distributor Pioneer released FOD DVD which was mastered from an American theatrical release print of 1967. Since Pioneer got the right from Kurosawa Production, MGM could not step in to the Japanese market until last year, "A Fistful of Dollars Complete Edition" DVD Release Committee in Japan released this SE FOD DVD which was mastered from the MGM's restored edition with the authorization of Kurosawa Production.

Same problem here. But doesn't anime feature large amounts of sex? At least the Hentai?

Japanese animes (legal ones) play game by pushing it to its limit. Quite a unique phenomenon because pornography is prohibited in Japan.
