If you get to see "A Man for All Seasons", please let me know what you think of it!  I love the play to death, and the movie is an excellent adaptation of it.  Paul Scofield, Wendy Hiller, Orson Welles, Robert Shaw, Leo McKern - all are amazing!

You left out John Hurt and the lovely Susana York. What kind of a fan are you?

Yeah, I was talking about really standout talent that can't be ignored, not the ash-and-trash performances.

Hurt's great, especially considering it was one of his first performances, but I don't really like the character of Rich - too much of a lightweight, methinks.  York's good but not exceptional - I'm not sure she'd be better than any number of other actresses in the part.

I think the overlooked performance in the film is Leo McKern as Cromwell.  Most of the acting praise for the film goes to Scofield, Welles, and Shaw.  Scofield is the lead, and is amazing, so I think he deserves the credit he gets.  While Shaw and Welles are both amazing, they have probably the easiest acting jobs of the play - two very well-written one-scene characters - it would take a pretty terrible actor to mess up Wolsey or the King.  McKern had to fight against having about half of his scenes cut out to make his character more two-dimensional, but he still was able to convey his character as not evil, but malignant - he looks nasty (my God, a toad with two different-colored eyes!  Was that deliberate on McKern's part?  Or could he just not finding a matching glass eye?), sounds nasty, and acts nasty - and his character's intelligence just accentuates that nastiness.  And yet he never gets mentioned when the film comes up - hell, the Video Hound went so far as to not list him (whereas it listed Vanessa Redgrave, who had no dialogue and was in the film for all of two minutes)!!!!!!!  A shame.

Personally, I think the "special edition" is a joke.  I already have the film on DVD, I'm not paying more money for a twenty-minute documentary on More.  On the plus side, however, I love the box art and the picture quality seems better at a glance.
