The releases are up on amazon.com, for $20.19 each, or $67.49 for the Leone box set. No pictures, yet, and not much information either.

The listing for GBU is mixed up with some animated Moby Dick movie, though...

I wonder why they don't release BluRays at the same time. I recently read this on a german computer news site, which might explain it:
http://www.heise.de/ct/hintergrund/meldung/85035
Translation of Q&A with Danny Kaye, Fox:
"On the topic of video encoding, Kaye stated that every film is encoded with every codec (MPEG2, MPEG4/AVC/H.264, VC-1) and then a decision is made on the used codec after inspecting the different results.
With some films, where no optimal source material was available, a decision was made not to release the movie after reviewing a complete MPEG2 encoding. He did not want to reveal any titles, because the studio was afraid this would reflect badly on future releases of these movies. In fact, after encoding some of the films with a more efficient codec and a higher bitrate, an optimal result could be acheived after all."

The old techniscope material might have too much film grain noise to allow an effective encoding in these high resolutions.

HD versions of these movies have been created (and used for the MGM and German Paramount DVD's before being downconverted) and have been shown on various US HD movie channels. I'm glad for these releases but are overly wary when people say 'will it contain the original mono'. My answer is A) It's Sony and I've been burned way too much in their classical DVD releases to give them my full trust (bar their wonderful Capra set of recent release) B) It's actually distributed by Fox which may mean they demand a mono track, C) There is no Mono track for the new scenes in the SE of TGTBTU and I can't see them going to the trouble of them making a mono track just for it.

depending on how it looks, I'll push for the box set.

haven't seen em here yet, do you know what specific HD channel they're on? Either way, even though it is HD, having the movies never hurts.

btw, how does downconversion work? i know it's got to with lowering television frequencies, but what is it needed for?

They have to compress the file so a standard DVD can hold it. I believe it's done by changing the MPEG format from which has been created when the film has been scanned into HD.

No mono, thought so. In fact if you have already got the R2's the only reason to get these would be non-PAL speedup on the soundtrack and the uncut DYS. They'll be using the transfers from the R2 so most likely for FOD and FFDM the German Editions will still be the better looking.

The question is, is it worth buying the box set or should I buy Duck You Sucker individually.

Does anyone know if FFDM in this new release has the complete beating scene which was chopped in the previous MGM release?

Do you mean as in the previous R2 SE release or the R1 release? The print that Sony used for this version will be the same as the Europe SE's so whats missing or present in those versions (except the censor cut in DYS) will be there in the MGM masters.

I meant R1 MGM DVD of FFDM. Is the European R2 edition restored version with the uncut beating scene? If the upcoming release of FFDM has that scene complete, then it is worth buying.

If you have it, can you check whenever you have time (preferably before June 5 Wink)?

Will do, I own the German R2 and UK R2 FFDM. I suspect it is the uncut torture scene.
