Thanks for the link, filmyfan and welcome to the forum.

Seems an admirable proposition to me. He he not planning on re-cutting, adding or subtracting scenes. What is on offer is a chance to make a brand new, restored print from a new type of negative which will "last forever". I hope the project gets the funding. A big name like Scorsese behind it, who has long been a champion of film preservation, can only help.

I now have even more respect for the great film maker.

Marty's got some good taste.

Can anyone identify some of the color problems with the current prints of the film?

I don't see any color problems myself. The DVD print is beautiful if you ask me. The only thing I want them to change is the credit music. I want them to continue with"Claudia's Theme" as the credits roll.

What's the matter with the one we got a few years ago?

Absolutely nothing. I guess they see something we don't. The current DVD version is so clear. I can't imagine how much better they could get. This will be interesting to see if this resoration goes through.

Marty owns a great print of West so maybe quite a difference between it and the transfer used on the DVD? The print I saw at the NFT could have done with quite a bit of a spruce up so a new inter-positive struck off the neg and then spruced up would be great to have. Well done Marty for suggesting it  Afro (I'm not so sure about the Rome film festival though... have heard and read some interesting things about this fest)

Well, the Guardian article, linked above, has this:

Quote
Margaret Bodde, executive director of the US-based Film Foundation set up by Scorsese and others, says the American director, who knew Leone, had the idea of getting the movie restored after watching the DVD released in the US. "The colour was really not correct and the quality not up to what it should be," she says.

According to this, Scorsese thinks colors and "quality" (?) can be improved. I guess he knows what he's talking about, but he's certainly got me scratching my head over this.

Marty's also sure about the quality of Vertigo in the new restoration to not reach the original peak of perfection that was the original release prints. He points to the scene in the department store with the flowers as being much more vivid then what we have now. I think were at the best version technology and time has given to us on that film.

I have heard some problems with the colors of some clothing, like Frank's jacket for example. I really can't weigh in any personal opinions on the matter b/c I don't have any gripes with the current DVD. The thought of an improved transfer has me very excited, and I have faith in Scorsese.

Will the restoration have the Harmonica beating scene or is it not avaible?
