Seems an admirable proposition to me. He he not planning on re-cutting, adding or subtracting scenes.

True but i'm sure a few of us wouldn't have a problem with some new footage. Smiley

And my SE dvd already looks stunning to me! Wink

It just sounds like an ordinary restoration to me, no added scenes I hope, and no alterations from the original film either. I hate when more than one version of a film is available. Just take the material deleted before and stash it on the DVD as extra material. Remember: There was a reason that Leone had scenes deleted from his films and he certainly would not like those scenes put back in after his death.

Now to what's wrong with the SE DVD:

  • Too many aliasing artefacts
  • Too much edge enhancement
  • Colours are off (too much red in images)
  • There is slight (albeit very slight) matting of the top of the image
  • At least on the PAL edition (haven't seen the NTSC version, but it would be nice if someone could confirm) the fields go out of order for a second creating interlacing artefacts. It occurs at the time the wagon driver jumps off the wagon in front of the watering station

These are all problems with the DVD mastering/authoring process. If a new transfer could be done, a restoration would not be necessary. Where's the benefit in the restoration?

The DVD was digitally restored, so the actual film elements are still in crappy condition. Also, I believe the colour on the DVD is incorrect because they only had faded material to work with and thus could only approximate the actual colours of the film.

Well, maybe there are better elements waiting to be found. If not, what are they going to use for reference for the film's "true" colors?

The reference is Marty's personal copy I believe. They'll also pull the neg which should be great to see.

I wonder how Marty has this copy he's talking about?

It's a known fact that when the film came out in 69 he fell in love with it and got his own copy.

But haven't the colors on his print faded too?

He says they haven't. I have read that his print is brought out only rarely and I suspect it keeps it in a good vault somewhere.

Yeah it should be interesting to see the colors on the print.

On the tv/DVD versions the colors lean more towards redish brown. On the film print that I saw in the theater there was a greenish yellow tint.

I guess Marty's print falls somewhere in between.

Where did you get the chance to see this in a theatre Peacemaker?

I'm just gonna butt in and say I saw most likely a print struck from the same elements as Peace did as it also had a greenish yellow tint (and some very bad tramlines and splices) but it was still an amazing experience to see it in the movie theater.  Afro
