And having it R1 would be more convenient.

Yeah I'm getting this strictly for the convenience.

I doubt I'll be picking up that boxset.

It'll hurt if you are cut.

Probably I'll be getting this one only too instead of the box set. But that cover is totally a surprise to me. Not bad as a design but it's a mistake not to have Rod Steiger.

Even if so, that's not a fair treatment for our Juan.

So essentially it's going to be a rip of the already available and sub-par UK SE print, only with the addition of the missing BBFC cuts? Argh, how lame...  I've the original UK release, so arguably it would be an improvement.... but most certainly a disappointing one.

Not necessarily. It may just be a direct rip with cuts and all!

Nooooooo, the bastards!!!

Only a matter of seconds I suppose, but grating none the less. Regardless, it's all certainly negligible in comparison to the audio issue..

Don't worry, there is only a very very slim chance that'll happen and were talking slim. The films were restored in the States, an HD master was created which would have the PAL, NTSC versions that have been down-converted from that original master. Unless they would be incredibly, incredibly lazy and used the PAL transfer (which I doubt, even from Sony) the NTSC will be taken directly off the original uncut HD master they used during the restoration. For instance the other European PAL releases were uncut. They were taken from a down conversion from the HD master (Which the UK version was) and released staright where the BBFC saw fit in the UK to cut the 6 seconds from it (most likely from a copy of the PAL master). Bottom line, don't worry.

Yeah, I figured such was the case.

Oh how I loathe sony though, they're certainly not known for rallying behind the integrity of the films they release. If it's foreign, and released by sony, odds are somethings been altered (especially if it's from Hong Kong).

I think they'll release the fruits of the MGM restoration. Why pay for more elements when you have a perfectly good master sitting in your vaults? The deal between Sony and Fox is good with Fox distributing certain films but these films aren't covered. Sony can do it right though, see In A Lonely Place, a gorgeous transfer from a great restored print and with some excellent extras. In fact most of the noir releases put out by Sony, Dead Reckoning, In A Lonely Place, The Big Heat, The Lady From Shanghai are good.

Admittedly they do have their moments, the films mentioned above being a prime example. I'm more concerned with how they tend to buy up the US distribution rights to Films like House of Flying Daggers, Kung Fu Hustle or Musa and tone down the violence to get a PG 13 rating, then hack away large chunks of dialog to quicken the pace for an American audience.

Their American bred releases usually fare much better..
