Having not read the books, it's these technical aspects that get me the most about the series.

The books are nothing too special.

TFOTR is certainly good. I enjoy the Shire chapters (getting familiar with old characters like Bilbo and Gandalf again) and everything after that dull "Old Man Willow" segment. Sad

TTT is probably the best of the three or at least the most entertaining. I always liked the Gollum character and you get more of him here in the second half. The Shelob finale is great.

ROTK- much like the film, it is overbearing and dull. Too much talk about battles long past and not more on Sam and Frodo.

"The Hobbit" is Tolkiens greatest achievement and I can't wait until this is adapted for the silver screen. Which, considering the lenght of the book, can translate well to film in about 3 hours and 15 minutes.

Yes that was always my favourite too!

But theres talk of not only breaking The Hobbit movie into two films but also to make it into another trilogy, rumours of a third film covering the events between The Hobbit and the LOTR which are list in the LOTR appendices which would mean a team of writers fleshing  out these very bare bones into some cohesive storyline.

The problem with LOTR,as much as i like it,is that it's so long winded that you find yourself trying to read it as quickly as possible in order to get to the next exciting bit.

LOL I have to second that.  Grin

I've seen the first two LOTR movies, and I think they're okay but nothing really special.

I'm not very keen either. It was hard enough having to wait 2/3 years to watch LOTR all the way through and i'm sure the Hobbit is smaller than any of those books.

The idea of the "in between" film is ludicrous. Angry

Who are these team of writers?  I frankly can't think of any director that can bring The Hobbit to life and try to make it as good or better than the book.  Very few movies based on books can do that, and it goes without saying that Peter Jackson's LOTR was not exactly at the level of the books.  The books had more to offer (at least the first one did).  I think that if Tolkien were alive he wouldn't comply with much of its content.  If it were up to him, in fact, I don't think he would have sold its rights.  I believe his son did that; the person to whom The Hobbit was dedicated primarily.

The Beatles opted to make the trilogy in the late 60's but Tolkien declined.

The Beatles were also sponsored to be Frodo, Pippin, Merry and Sam in a comic book series that was gonna focus mainly on their adventures.  The idea was never fully developed either.  It may have had something to do with Tolkien as well.  He might've thought they would denote all his philosophical ideas by making them comical.

Who are these team of writers?
No mention of any names so far.

My guess is that if Peter Jackson got the job he'd be using the same two female co-script writers as were used for LOTR.

Peter Jackson won't get the job. He has been banned by New Line in having any role in The Hobbit and it's affiliates due to his lawsuit against them.

Who would you have instead Sonny?

I fancy Terry Gilliam who proved superb with the fantasy imagery in some of his movies. Smiley
