Peter Jackson won't get the job. He has been banned by New Line in having any role in The Hobbit and it's affiliates due to his lawsuit against them.
LA heres a Hobbit Movie website showing rumours of directors on New Lines wanted list. Are any of these guys familiar to you?

Who would you have instead Sonny?

I fancy Terry Gilliam who proved superb with the fantasy imagery in some of his movies. Smiley

If i'm not mistaken, I believe Terry Gilliam was gonna be assigned to make LOTR.... although my source wasn't very reliable so it may or not be true.

In any case, Gilliam would make a good director for Tolkien's novels, though not entirely.  Gilliam's The Hobbit would most likely include elements more directed toward Gilliam's style rather than Tolkien's original emphasis.  In other words, Gilliam would be likely to change the story around so as to make it more distinguished style.

I usually don't get involved in worst lists, because anybody can have a bad day, but THE worst movie by a great director honor has to go to Steven Spielberg's 1941. I laughed, I cried(but mostly I cried). What a turkey, even Belushi couldn't make me grin once.                                                            On another subject, I take umbrage with whomever said FOD is Leone's worst film. It is his sweetest film. Made before he incorporated his operatic style, it moves along at a nice brisk pace. Truly one of his only "Action" pictures.

Really,are you allowed to say?

Do you think some of those named would be up to the task of making the Hobbit in a way that would satisfy fans of the book?

Mostly..... no
Thats quite worrying.Despite peoples misgivings about his efforts at least Peter Jackson was a lifelong fans of the books and undoubtably cared obsessively about the project and from what i've seen in the special features put in a huge amount of dedication way above the call of duty.
