I think High Chaparal was after 1960, I don't see Wild Wild West on the lists either.

The Big Valley was another good one.  But I think like Chaparal that was more late sixties also.....

I was just trying to look something up and happened on a geocities site someone constructed on television westerns.   Has alphabetical listings, dates, cast info.  If interested here's link:

Thanks for the informative post CJ. It is AMAZING
how popular westerns were back in the day.
Any idea why they were and not so today?
Will they ever make a comeback?Huh  Undecided

I just think we burned out the Genre, with all that on TV and Hollywood putting out big epic Westerns I think we got tired of it.

That's why Leone was a breath of fresh air at the time, too bad there wasn't a way to hold back the onslaught of all the crap that followed. There are gems but but its like looking for needles in the hay stack.

Seems like sit-coms are in a declining spiral from what they were in the 80's & 90's

Now for instance we get lots of laywer & cop shows, you'd think we'd burn out on them, same with reality shows.

One problem with Westerns is you got to have the talent to pull them off,  stock wranglers etc, etc, & believable actors & supporting actors (you had plenty of everything in the 50's & 60's) there was a feeling of continuity that streached from the "Great Train Robbery" to the 50's & 60' and 70's. They should have tried and amalgamated Almeria and the real American West better than they did. They should have given Leone all the money he wanted and taken his complete creative team to America and produced some more great Westerns here if that could have been possible. Instead it was almost like some kind of competition.

Other problems are the landscapes are getting degraded, old sets are rotting away or now tourist attractions, the wide open spaces have jet contrails.  There is not much you can "product place"  in a Western, Then we have PC limitations, you don't want to upset anyone in todays day & age.

I never burned out on TV westerns, because I never watched them. Gunsmoke and Bonanza, the 2 biggest, and I've never seen 1 complete episode. My opinion is , if you can eat steak, why bother with hamburger. I do the same today. I don't go near the TV, unless I have a good movie in my hand. American Idol, who cares?

Because a good hamburger is still damn tasty.
