Yet another great spaghetti thats been lacking its own thread.  Shocked

Silenzio's  review:-

Adios, Sabata

I put off getting this from netflix for a long time because I heard things like "It's a suckfest. The only thing that sucks more than this is a vacuum.... and Return of Sabata."  Well, I thought this was a darn good spaghetti (but maybe Yul Brynner could've done without the tassles...). Of course, the first Sabata blows this out of the water (but it blows a lot of spaghettis out of the water), but since this was originally supposed to be a completely different entity, "Indio Black," I don't look at it as a Sabata movie (and I don't think many people do), after all, none of the Sabata trademarks are there.  No derringer... no Van Cleef... no nothing. It's just a gosh-darn cash-in title like A Fistful of Dynamite. 

Anyways, more about the movie itself.  It is a very solid spaghetti, particularly the opening sequence.  Yul Brynner is a good spaghetti hero (still, could've done without the tassles) with a really neat-o mosquito rifle. It has a boss magazine that goes horizontally through it kind of like a magazien for the famous Hotchkiss machine gun that you see in Zapatas like "The Mercenary" and "A Bullet for the General." But, of course, he saves the last bullet chamber to store a cigar to take out after he's done killing everybody.  We get to see some of Parolini's typical cool gadgets, like in Sabata and (from what i've seen of it) Sartana. The plot is a little more complicated than most spaghettis, but that's in no way a bad thing.  There's lots of double-crosses and such going on all the time.  I had some trouble following it as I was distracted by my sick brother for a while.  The villain could've been better, he A) Didn't look that badass and B) They could've come up with a better villain intro than having him skeet-shoot mexicans (yes, this is extremely evil and sick, but it loses some of its impact when it is stolen verbatim from Django).  Also, during his introduction, there was one part in the song that reminded me of the introduction from an alternate version of "Rivoluzione Contro" on the DYS soundtrack.  Was this film made before or after DYS?

And, though i didn't mind, some people not like the over-the-top acrobats, one of which actually kicks large lead balls at people......

Arizona Colts review:-

ADIOS, SABATA 1970-For the English release, Yul Brynner takes over for Van Cleef as the Sartana like gunfighter with the trick guns. Although this was called INDIO BLACK in Italy, the characters fit nicely into the SABATA mold even featuring the previous films cast members in different roles. Apparently director Giancarlo Parolini enjoys the circus as he fills all his action films with acrobats or characters with eccentric weaponry. Here he continues the fad with his array of bad guys. Parolini would also utilize acrobats in his lively war picture 5 FOR HELL starring Gianni Garko and Klaus Kinski.

Don't like Yul Brynner. Hence don't like this film.


One out of two things should have occured to make this viewable (by me)

1. Bring back LVC

or

2. change the title to INDIO BLACK (the original title) so it can have nothing to do with LVC'S Sabata series.

Had I not known the pedigree of this film before hand, I would have assumed it was a SABATA film. I don't mind Brynner at all. He's fine and capable in the role. He has a certain amount of charisma about him. I need to see his italian crime movies he did. I hear there pretty awesome.

I agree about Brynner.Its  a Sabata movie in title only and Brynners excellent charismatic Indio Black is completely different to LVC's Sabata.

I absolutely love Nicolais soundtrack to this movie. Afro

It's a cheap knock-off of Roberto Pregadio's soundtrack to "Forgotten Pistolero". Tongue

There's undoubtably similarities with the main theme but Adios Sabata's score is quite varied. Smiley

Another one I've seen only once. Well, once on TV then the recent DVD. I'll have to revisit these as well sometime.

MGM re-released the Sabata trilogy seperatly. I wonder if they fixed the synch problems on the first film?

Adios Sabata: saw it twice in same night upon its first release.  My brother had driven us, so he controlled the vehicle, demanded that if I insisted on staying through the credits again, that we would stay for entire film again (power trips at work), about 1971.  For those as uninterested in that tidbit, the film sandwiched The Reivers with Steve McQueen.

With Lee it would've been better, but it's still a good and funny spaghetti. I love the silly supporting characters of the series, and in this one the gringo boy is also very good. Faking his death and all.  Afro So it's not as good as Sabata, but way better than Return of Sabata.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this as I don't care for the LVC Sabatas. It can't be because Brynner is superior casting to LVC--he isn't. It must be due to the story. And the score's pretty good (until the second half of the film). Go figure.
