Saw this American western sometime ago.
I like the fantastic visuals (I believe it was shot in technicolor. Can't recall) and the story is interesting until it turns into a court room drama (bleh).
Worth ONE view and that's about it.

Never, never, NEVER put Spencer Tracy in a Western. The guy is all talk, and Westerns demand action.

Banjo, when you can, add this to the American western library.

The weak link of this is the Widmark character, not Tracy (who suits the part perfectly). He doesn't fit the quite indistinct (and very short) image we have of him before the trial: if he had so many grudges against Tracy one would have no doubt he would have brought them in the open well before the chance given by the judicial vicissitudes. To boot Widmark looks both too old for the part and too strong. So he sounds completely unnatural when he confronts Tracy and list the doléances he nurtured against him. To make the character credible they should have portrayed differently, making him an utter sob and more wily, choosing another actor.
 Still I give the movie a 6\10.

It's a remake of House of Strangers (1949), which was a contemporary family drama (with Edward G as the patriarch). So they just took this cheesy melodrama and threw some Western clothes on it and called it a Western. I'm not fooled, not for a minute.

I'm glad that you agree, Don Titoli.

You always quote from the best. So this is what it's like to argue with yourself, eh? It's not bad. O0

That allows me to say one thing and its contrary without even having to put it into words.

The problem is not that they talk too much (although they do, but that's not the biggest problem), being shot beautifully the movie glides pretty well for the first two acts, I wasn't bored for a second, but the third act (the solution) is - as in many classic American Westerns - the weak point; when they basically throw all the preceding building up into water and end it all with some action and a couple of gun shots. (High Noon comes to mind.) Spencer Tracy plays as if he was born for this role, unfortunately (as titoli mentioned) Richard Widmark's character seems the real misfit. The rest of the cast is okay.

Had the ending been thought better this would have climbed up in the 7 domain.

6.3/10

This is interesting, didn't know it before watching the movie.

Fox Movie Channel played this film recently; I found it so excruciating -- despite very good performances by Spencer Tracy and Richard Widmark -- I shut it off halfway through.
