SORRY TYPO!  I find OUATIAMERICA too sentimental...The WEST is my favourite western.
Now i'll just wait for the fallout of the OUATIA crowd  :-\

BANG!

Sorry. It was an accident. RIP Rojo.

Well I still have 5 potential accidents in my barrel, so please vote for OUATIA.

I gotta say it doesn't surprise me that OUATIA is in danger.

Though I think it's a great film (and voted to boot FAFDM) there are parts of OUATIA where Leone seems almost as if he wants to grate on the sensibilities of his audience.  The endless phone ring, anyone?  And then the rape scene is simply difficult to sit through, not just because it's so harsh but also because it harms our ability to sympathize with Noodles.  Then there's the ending, which sort of amounts to one big question mark...coming at the end of such a long film, I figure that really frustrates a lot of people too.

So to me, it is entirely plausible that some here may rank OUATIA lower than some of the other flicks.  I'm very curious to see what happens next.  :)

You make good, valid points sb4. ALthough I think OUATIA is a flat out masterpiece, there is scenes in there that are hard to watch, preticularly the one's you mentioned.

Yet, you think it's a "great" film.
Interesting.

I can't but help thinking that if the credit read "directed by Brian DePalma (fill in the blank) this film would have a much lower profile.
Oh well, the childhood scenes were brilliant , at least.

My definition of a "masterpiece" is a film without flaws.

BTW  Has anyone read , seen, or heard Frayling's opinion on AMERICA?

In his Leone bio he was very careful to avoid a personal opinion.
Although he did print very positve reviews, mostly European.

Info most appreciated!

All films have there flaws. So I guess you don't believe in masterpieces.

Then most James Bond movies are MASTERPIECES.

I know what you mean, I just wanted to do a stupid comment.

I agree with Tuc, I cannot find any movie without any flaw... For most philosophes, a masterpiece is a work of art which "works" alone, by itself, at any time. It's a bit hard to explain but for instance, Fistful Of Dollar would not be a masterpiece since a major part of its interest (to me) is that it plays with the codes of a genre, the Western. So you have to have seen many westerns to understand what is great in FoD. So these philosophes would not say that FoD is a bad movie, but it doesn't rely only on itself.
on the other hand, OUATITW relies too on all the previous westerns ever done, but I think you can enjoy the major part of the interest of the movie without knowing about other westerns. A better example would be GBU, that does not rely on other movies.
Then, a masterpiece done today is supposed to touch people in 9999999999years and 9999999999 years ago too, since its interest does not depend on the context or anything.

This is why a masterpiece does not need any rule. On the cotnrary, the artists have to find "rules" in these masterpieces to do "good" work of art after that, but neither will be a masterpiece, since a masterpiece does not follow any rules but create rules.

That's a theorical definition, by I cannot remember who exactly (Kant must agree with most of it, and many greeks too... But i didn't read any philosophic text or book for a year now so everything is kind of fading out in my memory). Of course it cannot be adapted to the reality, it is an ideal : every work of art is inspired by the ones befor, you have basic editing rules that are always respected in films, and the like. and this definition supposes that everybody could sit in front of a picture, a movie or anything and we would all agree : THIS is beautiful. That's never going to happen. Even on this board, where we have a big commun passion, we cannot agree on the film of Sergio Leone :)

Well, I'm not sure it's a useful post... May be I was just trying to look brilliant, after the previous stupid post  :P

The endless phone ring, anyone?

It's funny it seems to be one of the most subjective thing in this movie : about half people who watch the opening sequence just cannot stand it (ANSWER THAT F****** PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! yes yes yes yes he does........... NOOOOOOOOOOO! IT WAS ANOTHER PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), and the other half just loves it (me:) ).

Not sure about the proportions, but still, it's always funny to watch this sequence with other people just to see the different reactions, believe me :)

I have no matter with the phone ring... Leone liked monotone noises. The creaking windmill...
And Robert De Niro is a half-god.  :P Or he was... in that times.

What's the question about the ending? I've read it in book... Max commits suicide, what's here the question?
