It's my second favorite after OUATITW.  In my opinion it stands far above GBU though.

I can't choose among Leone's last 4 films. I like them all equally.

There's probably at least 2 parts in every movie.  Firstly the underlying story, secondly its presentation to the audience.

I saw Leone's westerns when they were first released in the cinema and thought they were all good.  Leone certainly had an eye for detail and pointed out things that I had not thought about before -  cowboys would have dust on their clothes, be wrinkled from exposure to the sun and have stubble, beards and unkempt hair. There were twists and surprises in the stories and puzzles for the viewer to think about and whilst they were entertaining to watch, from a personal viewpoint I couldn't at that time relate much of the underlying story to my own experiences in life.

However along came OUATIA and the story involved a group of boys growing up, battling against poverty and hardship, developing deep friendships, one of the boys fancying another boy's sister, humour, music, betrayal, the consequences of betrayal, attempts at reconciliation 35 years later, all of which happened to me and all of which I can directly relate to personally.  I remember when I first saw it, I also lost count of the number of things I had never seen in a movie before, things from a very imaginative and creative director, things I really liked. Telephone ringing 24 times, stirring coffee for over 60 seconds etc.

So for me OUATIA has everything - a great underlying story and a presentation second to none. But we're all individuals and I don't expect or perhaps I don't even want others to like exactly the same things as I do.   Smiley

Smiley  mal247 got in there first.  I'm with him though.  Like I say I've really come to appreciate all of the films.  Thanks to all the informative people that post here......  It motivated me to check out the older films I hadn't seen in a while or maybe watched on commercial television.  Still need to see COR tho....
You're right. I apologyze Mal247.  Smiley

OUATIA is the best movie ever made, and OUATITW is very very close. IMO, the fiht for the third place is also very difficult between GBU and DYS...
