Getting Eastwood was a stroke of luck.  Nobody else could bring the same mixture of irony and physical menace, hence noone else was perfect for the Anti-John Wayne MWNM became.   Bronson had physical menace, but lacked irony.  Coburn had irony, but lacked physical menace.   Fonda had been around since the thirties and could only be "refreshed" by playing Frank.

  Can you imagine if Clint had not gotten the part of the Man with No Name?  He might never have hit it big.  With that domino effect that means no FAFDM, no GBU, two mules for sister sara, kelly's heroes, and no dirty harry.
