In everyone's life there is a "Summer of '42"

« : July 21, 2007, 07:54:45 AM »

Every time I watch the montage scene I find it difficult to ID most of the actors/actresses.
The obvious ones are Ingrid Bergman, Errol Flynn and Charlie Chaplin. Some of the most
classical beauties are in these scenes.
I would like to ID them all. Can anyone provide input? I linked the youtube clip.
You can use the elapsed time to reference each scene. Thanks and good luck!!

               http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=od1GDiVLv08&mode=related&search=

My ID's (guesses in some instances):

00:24      Cary Grant

00:47      Natalie Wood (?)  This would be an obvious goof since she only began acting in the mid 50's

00:53      Charlie Chaplin

00:55      Errol Flynn (?)

00:58      Frank Sinatra (?)

1:03        Valentino

1:05        Ingrid Bergman

1:21        Marcello Mastroianni

Thanks NSS!. I am surprised you were able to ID so many of the actors & films considering how
short the clips are. O0

geo, would definitely be difficult to identify all of them by watching.  There are quite a few close up shots and various angle shots that would make it tough.  Would almost need a cinephile of Martin Scorsese ability to get them all.  Somewhere in my reading, I read a review of the recent Limited Edition release of the film.  It said that part of the extra features was a breakdown of that montage.  Just mentioning it if you want to pursue this to that end.  That Limited Edition box has a lot of extras including Cinema Paradiso inspired food recipes  ::).  There's a deluxe 2 disc edition that came out at the same time.  Might be worth checking out to see if it has the same special features content.  I have the old HBO home video theater version on DVD.  I saw the director's cut on VHS sometime in the early mid 90s.  I'll look more to see if I can find info on those special features.  I didn't find any info in some of my books on Italian filmmakers that had interviews with Tornatore ..... where he possibly talked about the montage.

I appreciate the info NSS. I will definitely follow up on it.

Here's another ID....

2:38 Spencer Tracy & Ingrid Bergman

I looked into the special features on the various DVDs.  The featurette that breaks down the montage is called The Kissing Sequence and runs 7 minutes.  It appears it's not on the recent Region 1 releases that came out in November of last year.   Looks like it may be a featurette particular to a Region 2 Pal version produced in the UK by Arrow films.  I searched around and found a couple of links.

Here's a link to Arrow Films and production information on their Deluxe Edition which seems to have come out in March of this year.

http://www.arrowfilms.co.uk/index.php?tle_id=311

Here's another site I found just by searching that says specifically the feature "breaks down each kiss so that we now know which film the clips were taken from and which actors are seen kissing".  Here's that link:

http://sci-fi-online.50megs.com/2007_Reviews/dvd/07-03-26_cinemaparadiso.htm

It's possible that the Region 1 may have the information in the short Exploring A Timeless Classic or on the film commentary which mostly features Millicent Marcus (Italian film scholar, author and Yale Professor) along with Tornatore himself.  My feeling is that all the information in that montage feature on the Region 2 release is probably not on the Region 1 version for you.  Here's a link to DVD Talk and the Region 1 Limited Edition.

Many thanks, Mike.  Suggestions for the missing names are very welcome.

Someone suggested Sonny for #04 and John Wayne for #15 but I think they were joking.
