As far as I know 'Sentenza' is the Italian name for Angel Eyes. It means 'sentence' I think. Having not seen the Italian version I can't be totally sure though.

has anyone here ever read the novelisation? Angel Eyes is called Sentenza and Tuco refers to Eastwood's character as Whitey, not Blondie.

Google translate has it down as Judgement. I don't know if it means what type of punishment gets dished out at the PoW camp.

In the German version LvC's name is like in the original version Sentenza. Tuco calls him even Sergeant Sentenza, shortly before he gets in trouble.
Angel Eyes was just an invention for the English dub.

Who came up with the name Angel Eyes? Was it Mickey Knox in a moment of inspiration?

We covered it here :
http://www.fistful-of-leone.com/forums/index.php?topic=247.msg2496#msg2496
quote is below
Actually, Clint gave him that name during the filming. Lee Van Cleef said it in an interview.
"That name `Angel Eyes' in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; was that tailor-made specifically for you?" I asked.
"If it was in the script, I didn't see it," Van Cleef recalled, "and I'm usually pretty careful about giving scripts a close reading. I think Clint came out with it one day. It just kind of sprung out, and it was used ever since. I made no complaints about it. They've referred to me as that quite often in publicity since that time. I thought it was pretty good."

Ah thanks! So Clint gets the credit for it then. I wonder if he's ever confirmed this himself.

When they filmed the movie, it was "Sentenza." When Tuco is eating, just before he gets tortured, watch his lips when he says, "I bet they don't call you 'Sergeant Angel Eyes.' " His lips say "Sentenza." The name "Angel Eyes" was Eastwood's idea, but only after filming was complete. The fiming was "Sentenza," the dub was "Angel Eyes."

I've read all three novelisations... and I wasn't exactly impressed, it comes across like a bad translation sometimes. Sentenza really doesn't work in English.
