Personally, I've always considered the "which one I think is the better film vs. which one is my favorite" debate to be absolute bullshit. They're the same thing.
The Magnificent Seven was good ...I guess ...but mighty flaws. Seven Samurai is better in just about every way.

The overall acting in The Magnificent Seven was below average, while the plot structure felt like a mess. It's a decent movie overall, but nothing compared to a near masterpiece like Seven Samurai.
The Magnificent Seven, and yes, the acting from Yul Brenner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Colburn, and Eli Wallach was below average.
Eli is absolutely great. In Seven Samurai, the lead bandit was not so characteristic.
