Was it How The West Was Won?
Van Cleef played an uncredited river pirate in the movie and Fonda played Jethro Stuart a railroad guy.

Also "The Tin Star" (1957).  Fonda was Morg Hickman, the hero of the film, and Lee Van Cleef with Ed McGaffey, who was one of the villains.  I haven't seen the film, so I can't give you too much more detail . . .  Undecided

You got it Groggy, Fonda plays a bounty hunter who helps out Anthony Perkins the green town sherrif. Van Cleef plays a bad guy whose brother gets shot up in a hold up that they pull off. He lures the town Doc to their ranch to patch up his brother. As the Doc leaves Van Cleef puts a bullet in his back.
