Best of the three Dahl's thrillers, though it has 2 of my all time unfavourite non-actors. Of course, the premise is all wrong: the husband has no reason not to do his work himself. I like the way Cage throws the woman out of the train. 8/10

That's what you get, Drink, for being such an annoying Melville fanboy.

I liked this a great deal when I first saw it on TV back in the 90s; it loses some touch with multiple viewings but it's still an above average neo-noir with interesting characters and visual feats. The only real complaint is that it has one or two too many simple plot turns (like Lyle burning down the old barrack to send away the other cops from the station, or him nearly hitting Michael with his car while the latter's running away from Sheriff Wayne, or Suzanne having the little knife on her keyring, etc.). That's one little coincidences after another. Aside that, the characters are ''believable enough for a noir'', and the paste is good. Acting: Cage passable, Boyle better, and the old favorite of mine J.T. Walsh best. Solid accompanying faces too. Hopper... well... a bit out of place in certain moments.

7.5/10

And the memorable, almost surreal opening with Michael waking up in the car in the middle of nowhere and shaving in the barrel full of rain water in desert.  Afro
