It was very good. You'll enjoy a nice knife/fist fight towards the later part of the second act.

am I the only person who likes Cronenberg's more commercial films?

Knife fight sounds cool.
Only person? Probably not. By commercial, you mean this and A History of Violence? Anyways I remember liking The Fly, and I was surprised that Cronenberg took up such a normal looking movie at the time (05, A History of Violence). Now I guess I don't care, but it seemed weird to me at the time.

That's how I feel, everybody else I know (two people Roll Eyes) doesn't seem to like his last two films.

Yes.

"The Fly" would qualify as well.

Nope. I loved A History of Violence. Cronenberg's still got it. He's speaking at my girlfriend's school this weekend and showing Eastern Promises (why did I have to go visit last weekend!!!)

"am I the only person who PREFERS Cronenberg's more commercial films to his artsy one's?"

If by "artsy ones" you mean Videodrome, Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch, Crash, etc. then, yeah, you're the only one who prefers the others. Unless you don't count the millions whose fave Cronenberg is The Fly.

Censors Slammed for Release of 'Eastern Promises'

British censors have been criticized over their decision to allow violent film Eastern Promises starring Naomi Watts and Viggo Mortensen to be screened uncut. The David Cronenberg film centers on the Russian mafia in London, and includes shocking scenes including one in which a knife is twisted into a man's eye and two victims have their throats cut in graphic detail. The scenes were so gruesome that members of the audience at the premiere last Wednesday at the London Film Festival gasped and turned away from the screen. Now the decision by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) to award the film an 18 certificate without any cuts has come under fire from former censors. Andreas Whittam, former president of the BBFC, says, "If I thought this was the type of film that was likely to make people leave the cinema, or even make them have to look away for quite a while, then I would question why the scene should be left in." But the BBFC stood by the decision, a spokesman adds, "Scenes that make people turn away are part of the fun of going to movies. These days we are not here to cut; we are here to provide information and let people then make up their minds."

It's a Cronenberg film...what were they expecting?
A touching story about family and the crazy hijinks of goofy gangsters over the holidays?

I'm surprised Mortensen's penis wasn't an issue here in the states.
