I always thought the dvd's were very lacking in extras. now we get that and a proper restoration with correct aspect ratio.

Well you can't really say the correct aspect ratio since Kubrick never wanted widescreen because he wanted the audience to see the way he had filmed the movie.

True (except, of course, in the case of 2001, which was filmed in Cinerama).

yeah but i doubt the hippies really cared if it was WS or FS Afro

maybe so, but I only remember FMJ to be FS. anyway,  I've seen the way they make WS into FS, but how do they make FS into WS exactly?

As to my understanding, they "matte" the print.  They take the 4:3 aspect and slap some black bars on the top of the bottom (covering up part of the frame).  A lot of films are filmed with this thought process in mind for theatrical release, and then they can be shown in 4:3 without it compromising the director's framing too much.  El Topo was filmed like this, for example.

well when 2001 came out in cinemas in the US absolutley no one liked the movie except for the hippies Afro
