titoli, keeping in mind that only some of these have English subs, are there any on this list you can recommend? http://www.libreriauniversitaria.it/produttore_Cristaldi+Film-cristaldi_film.htm

Many, but if they don't have subs you'd better stay away from them. Of course, Salvatore Giuliano is one of the best italian movies ever. The two Germi's are classic comedies (up to a point) that I could recommend though only to one who likes this italian specialty. Apart from Giuliano my favourite among these is Un turco napoletano with Totò. But this great farce classic (everybody in Italy saw this at least twice and all the people I know can quote lines from it) I really don't know how would it fare with subs. If it has them though, it is worth a try at least to know who Totò was.
Kapò is a good Pontecorvo, though I remember it vaguely. Senso is beloved by many critics but with me it never fared well: I don't like melodramatic movies and this is the epitome of filmic melodrama.

As I presume this could have not only sub but also english audio, stay away from La tenda rossa as from hunger. I saw it in a theatre when released and it is only a piece of rubbish. This production was probably set up only to illegally export money from Italy (I'm not joking).

Thanks, titoli, sounds like Kapo is a good choice (it has English subs).
