More politely, how do you change the avatar??  I've pasted in a new jpg and entered the right password but I'm still left with an outsize, er, Huey!

You can't. You're linking to a jpg on the Shobarry website which is 429 X 338 and that's the name of that tune...
If you r/click it...d/l the pic..resize it..& have a place to store the jpg yourself..then you can link to that.
Do you have an image program that can do the resizing?..(Irfanview, for example)....& does your ISP give you a certain amount of space for a home page?
If not..you could try ImageStation...

Huey - alternatively look for a similar but smaller image on a different site. Google image search is great.

huey. divine intervention must have hit you. for benito's sake, please consider leaving it the way it is. cool.

Huey, please, consider finding a smaller one. Not everybody on this board uses a large screen or fullscreen windows. A giant avatar like yours breaks the layout and makes reading the board quite annoying.

All this crap started with Cal's update of the board software around January. I think he really should reinstate the maximum size rule for avatars in this place.

Well, to me it reads as if he made some unintended mistake while trying to change it. Anything else doesn't really make sense.

Huey, just for testing purposes try using the avatar redyred has linked above.

1) Click on your Profile

2) In the box on the left hand side, labeled Modify Profile click on Forum Profile Information

3) Next to where it says I have my own pic: you should see the URL of your current oversize avatar: http://koti.mbnet.fi/rs901536/shobary/actors/benito/Benito_Stefanelli.jpg

4) Now, change that URL to the one redyred suggested: http://www.thelin.net/laurent/cinema/photos/et_pour_quelques_dollars_de_plus/benito_stefanelli.jpg

5) Finally click on "Change Profile" - You should now see this picture in your posts:
