It never ends. A cut of 30 minutes would have been welcome. Still good songs (though none top notch), rather dull ballets and good performances by Albert, Flippen (better as a singer than as an actor) and Whitmore. Steiger totally miscast. First time I find Gloria Grahame sexy: probably because of her black hair. She looks younger than ten years before.  7\10

Aye, it's a foot tapper alright!

Oklahoma at the turn of the century, boys meet girls, it's not straightforward, love is a funny old thing, oh and a very unstable farmhand is seething to the point of explosion.

It's vastly unfair to say that Oklahoma! should be watched purely for the magnificent tunes (as some critics suggest), chiefly because that does a gross disservice to the choreography of the dancing, which is simply marvellous here. The Rogers and Hammerstein stage show from which this film adaptation was born out of, was a production that set something of a benchmark for the Broadway musical, this may explain why a director as strong as Fred Zinnemann was chosen for this picture. In hindsight it may well have been more wiser to have given a lesser director the reins as Oklahoma! often veers too close to being serious, this is a fun picture (all be it) with a darkly important turn of events in its last quarter), and ultimately it's the fun and uplifting aspects of the piece that stop it from sinking.

Acting wise the cast are all admirable without ever reaching great heights, with Rod Steiger seemingly the one actor who causes most debate. It's difficult to know for sure if he sticks out like a sore thumb because his Jud Fry is the only grumpy character in the piece? Or, if as I suspect, Steiger is guilty of over hamming the acting sandwich! Still, one thing is for sure, it's a blast to watch and certainly memorable for what ever reason you side with. All the tunes are great and now are something of folklore numbers, while the Technicolour enthuses heart into the Arizona based shoot and those beaming toothy smiles, all in all, a very enjoyable foot tapper. 7/10
