may be effeminate leaning characters? But are they actually an archetype of Westerns? They (gays) didn't really populate American Westerns only the SW's but if you consider the stock characters that played drummers/salesmen they were generally portrayed as "pansies" in traditional Westerns.

arrows - Escape from Fort Bravo - great use of braketing to find the correct range by the Apaches.

arrows - Escape from Fort Bravo - great use of braketing to find the correct range by the Apaches.
But lets not forget the arrow that pierces Joanne Dru during the Indian attack in Red River. She takes it without flinching . . . what a man!

  If we're counting Drums Along the Mohawk as a western, both Ward Bond and Edna Mae Oliver take arrow hits.  But like a true badass, Bond just rips it out of his shoulder. Grin

bedrolls - Rawhide the TV show every week had at least one or two camping night scenes that figured prominent use of bedrolls.
cookie - Rawhide again had a main character, Wishbone (Paul Brinegar) and his dimwitted "cooks louse" Mushy Mushgrove featured weekly.

bar tenders - great bartenders in Westerns A#1 has to be Water Brennan as Judge Roy Bean in "The Westerner", honarable mentions, Lionel Stander in OUTITW, Paul Brinegar in "High Plains Drifter", the two barkeeps in "For A Few Few Dollars More", and many more when I think of them.
