The IMDb trivia section for this film confirms Groggy's answer. Not that we should rely on that: it also claims that the clinch-on-the-beach was the director's last minute inspiration; elsewhere it states it was Lancaster's idea.

Didn't I read somewhere that Eli was too "husky" for that role, that they wanted a scrawny guy (Sinatra) ?  Or did someone make the producer an offer he "couldn't refuse" ?
