The movie was pretty good. Nothing overly special.
Had the final showdown been handled better (everybody will know what I mean when they see it. It's painfully obvious they should have gone a certain route which they didn't) it would have been a minor classic.

Not exactly the "lost classic" everybody was hoping for but, as it stands, it's a good movie.

I'll go more into detail this weekend (if I get the chance)...

One more thing...Chelo Alonso is hot in this.

EDIT:
I'd rate it higher than Petroni's TEPPEPA, which I found dull.

I don't get what you mean by going to another route for the final showdown. I presume they had many options. I do not find much fault for they one they chose.
My main gripe about the movie is the protagonist, Luke Askew. He looks like an american Luciano Rossi: so why not go for Rossi? No, you had to chose somebody  rather different. He is anonymous in my book.
The story is a mixture of '800 popular novel's orphan in peril and "back from the depth" hero. It works quite well for creating the suspense about what is all about and then, once the mystery is unveiled, it has good action. I find fault with almost all the actors, with the exception of Pistilli (at his usual top), Alonso (perfect for the part, though I do not find her attractive. I find sexier bovine faced Konopka) and the ugly one playing her loving cousin: their scenes with her taunting him are great, of a higher level than the rest of the movie. For these scenes alone the movie gets a 8\10.

SPOILER

I assumed Askew would shoot Pistilli in the forehead thus saving the kid.
This would be Askew's redeeming moment since years earlier he accidentally killed his own son in a similar situation (Pistilli being the bottle).

And I didn't buy the mexicans letting him go at the end.

SPOILER ENDS

That's too bad, I liked the Petroni films I've seen, what is the problem with it?

I don't think very much of Petroni. He hasn't much style (I even don't care much for Death Rides a Horse), or at least not an interesting style. His films are as good as their screenplays, and Serpent surely has a potentially interesting story which is not the usual SW thing, but it somehow remains unsatisfying. The story is a bit odd, the characters are not interesting enough for me, the acting is mostly indifferent or exaggerated but seldom convincing. Luigi Pistilli and Magda Konopka have their moments though.

It's an irresolute film with some good scenes, some weak scenes, all in all nothing special, nothing exciting in it, just an ok film for fans of the genre.

But if you like Petroni, you maybe find some more rewarding ideas in it. I know some people who think it is a good one.
Give it a chance. The DVD version is of pretty good quality in 2.35:1.

Just watched this today, not great, but not bad either. Pistilli is great, Askew adequate, and I liked looking at Chelo Alonzo's cleavage, I'll give it an 7/10

Her cousin played by Franco Volabra liked looking too  Shocked
