If anybody is wondering what the title means, it's a very out-dated way of saying "a certain amount of comfort" or "a small amount of comfort".

I read somewhere that this will be a direct sequel to Casino Royale, picking up a few minutes after that one when Bond took down Mr. White.  Should be interesting, definitely looking forward to this one. Afro

Well, I have no quantum of solace left for Quantum of Solace. The title sucks.

The title sucks.

Kinda agree but the title has little to do with the quality of the film itself.

But is that what a Bond audience wants? I doubt it very much.

Well, do you mean actually fans of the series who know where the title comes from and what it means in the proper context, or the causual movie fan? Go over to CBn (commanderbond.net) and you'll see the vast majority of posters on those boards love the title and have been aware of it and the short story it comes from for years. Sure, the causual movie fans usually comprise most of the box-office intake and studios usually give the masses what they want whether quality or crap, but luckily for us hardcore fans of the series EoN has been showing a lot of balls with these movies lately and giving the die-hards their turn.

Yeah, Eon is definitely showing a lot of balls by giving their movie a pretentious title that means nothing outside of the context of the original story.  Cheesy

The worst thing about the Bond series is the hard core fans it's produced. These are the people who think the Roger Moore films are worth something. In fact, the Moore films are awful, not because Moore was necessarily a bad Bond (he had potential to be the best), but because they were so badly written. But the hardcore fan doesn't care, he (they are always pasty faced males) will always find some way to alibi them. The great thing about Casino Royale 2006 was the fact the writers went back to Fleming for at least some of their inspiration. Now with the announcement that the new film will use a Fleming title only (and surely discard what little there is in the short story), EON is signaling that they're returning to business as usual. AND they're doing it with a completely crap title. But why consult the hardcore fans on the matter? They've demonstrated time and again that they turned their shit detectors off EONs ago.

When it comes to people liking Roger Moore, that's really just a generational thing. There's a LOT of people who grew up with Roger Moore as Bond and always think of him as THE one. Just like people who grew up with Connery think of him as THE one. Brosnan even has his hard-core fans (go to craigisnotbond.com). I still say it's a great fucking title. Not expecting the exact details of the short story to be apart of the movie, unless maybe there's some quick line of dialoge that may connect it to the events of it, but the overall meaning of the short story will probably transcend into the context of the movie.

As kid I enjoyed the most exactly Moore-era Bond-movies. I don't know what I'd think of them now (haven't watched them for a long time, with a few exceptions), but if I liked them, how much of that would be because of the nostalgia? What the series needed before the last movie was more agent-stuff and less action and impossible devices, and that's pretty much what we got. Frankly, I think Casino Royale is the best Bond-film to date (it has also the only Bond-song that's actually good as a song). And I hope they keep that direction. I can see there trademarks or specialities for everyone of the three longterm Bonds: Connery- agent-adventure; Moore- more comedy/devices; Brosnan- big blockbuster type action. I hope Craig's speciality will be same as Connery's with grittier violence.

To my mind, OHMSS is the Bond that most resembles Casino Royale 2006. And as Simon Winder points out (in The Man Who Saved Britain), it has one of the very best scores.
