Favourite non-Leone Morricone Score

Apart from "The Mission" (his personal favourite), and "Cinema Paradiso", my pick would be "Days Of Heaven", probably his most underrated score. I personally think it's one of the best things he has ever written, and that says a lot. The man is a genius.

I heard rumours that he had hand 90 film soundtracks in the space of 3 years
(Most with Bruno Nicolai Conducting) in this period. Amazing output


Guns For San Sabastian Has alot of GBU type themes, ideas.. same era.

The Great Silence Just for the beautiful title theme.
Its a sin the soundtrack has never had a decent CD release.

The Sicilian Clan & Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion also really good.

The Thing-Morricone does electronic minimalism plus some REALLY claustrophobic orchestral cues,many not used in the film

Wolf-Extremely evocative combination of savagery and dark beauty

Cinema Paradiso-Simply lovely,esp.the love theme composed by his son or nephew

Legend Of 1900-Same director,similar beauty plus several great little piano pieces

The Untouchables-Rousing,exciting

Four Files On Grey Velvet-my fav.Argento one,madly experimental but entirely fitting

I think ive mentioned this before put  i think Carpenter had a small hand in that score. you can hear his style quite a few times over the soundtrack, and his synths more to the point.

There are 2 tracks where you can unmistakingly hear Carpenters Music.
Humanity (Part II) (7:15) has Carpenter synthesizer keyboard based rhythm section running the length of the track. This is the music from the opening scenes.
Its basicily 3 quarters Morricone, the last quarter when the loud organ type synthesizer solo kicks in, is Carpenter.  (In trademark horror overdrive)
Maybe there was a colaboration. I hope so. Even though the credits are given completely to Morrricone.

There is the other track that sounds like its just Carpenter, i think it could be 'Wait' ?

Why is it that Morricone never won an oscar?

He lost in 1987, with "The Mission", against..... The LAst Emperor..... for example.

Anyway, I think the fact that he never won an oscar mades him even more legendary.

Question: I consider "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" a great, outstanding score.

Did "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" competed against "Malena" the same year? If so, I woul choose "Crouching Tiger".

To me Morricone is God, but I try to be rational!!!!!

'Untouchbles' was great but I agree that Last Emperor (especially 'Rain')was even more great. I have great respect to Ruyichi Sakamoto ,who is one of huge Morricone admirer, and I think he deserve it. As for 'Crouching Tiger(Yes it's great too), to me the reason 'Crouching Tiger' won was it was better movie than 'Malena'.

Mission lost to 'Round Midnight' in 1986 then won golden globe.

Ennio was very famous and every Producer during 70's-80's wanted a Morricone'theme for his products.
It was fashionable

I mean that  we must  now make a distinction between masterpieces seriously built with the Director (Sergio, Bernardo ....)  and tune (even great tune) componed far from the film .

In the first case Ennio was a partner, in the other case only a provider  .(a genius provider)
