yes this is correct.
Melodyne made by Celemony, Germany, is a digital program that can separate the individual sounds in a mono mix without  noticable artifacts.
you've been hearing it's results on many currect CD's.
it also corrects bum notes and timing errors.
so, how's it applied to a mono soundtrack?
after detection in Melodyne, the resulting separate audio tracks are placed on different channels of a mixer and panned to appropriate positions.
they are subject, then to any and all treatments available with modern mixing.
NO deterioration of the audio is experienced in this operation, so Ennios music and the sound effects would remain as the were initially, just in legitimate stereo or even surround.

I presume you're referring only to double- or multitrack recordings mixed in mono. How does it work with mono tracked recordings, acustical or electrical?

hi titoli & cigar joe,
i knew you'd be interested.
actually, it is supposed to unravel any clear source material.
so, an old mono track, like our fave "Se Tele" could, and i emphasise that, be separated back to the single instruments.
but, in Se Tele's case, the recording of the backing is very muddy. Mina's vocal could be separated, though.
something like "Sgt Pepper's" might be a better bet........
certainly, Ennio's SL scores could be separated and re-mixed with no degradation to the original sounds, as these are already OK quality wise.
other than this sort of potential in the arts, think of the spying industry, "Enemy of the State" here we come for real.
this software also lets you change chords, etc already performed, from major to minor at the click of the mouse.
i already use the monophonic version with singers(as opposed to "polyphonic"), even the best performances can be improved sometimes.
this new version is multi-polyphonic.
