Many people on this famous website tried to logically explain facts and events.
But Sergio always preferred a beautiful scene than a rational way.
For example if you fall down from a train, enchained with Sgt Wallace and you have to separe your hand from the dead one of the sergent what should you do ?

You should take stones and crash with it the Sgt hand, mashing his bones and his  flesh till his hand be totally destroyed.,

Disgusting no?

You could also put Sgt Wallace corpse on the railroad... and wait for a day the next train. Wink

True Colonna but the train idea was definitely cool, lol.

one thing i love about that scene.
first tuco is chained to brega for what must seem like hours in the hot sun.
along comes a troup train and suddenly tuco is not olny free but hops aboard for a free ride closer to the gold and his reunion w/ blondie & angel eyes @ sadhill.

one minute tuco's down and out but his survival technique's deliver him.   BTW, that "damn" train nearly killed eli in real life. leone kept wanting tuco to raise his head higher so we see there are no stunt men but actually wallach.  wallach noticed there were steps on the train that came dangerously close to his head. after 3rd take leone keeps the first take anyway.   later,  bridge nearly blows clint & eli away when it is detonated.  leone wanted them closer to the GB&U bridge,
but clint says i don't think so, we're moving to higher ground with you.  thanks to clint eli escapes the horrendous blast.  eastwood had noticed when the first bridge blew, by mistake, that a extra portion of dynamite/black powder was being used and made note not to be too close to it.
from STDWD obviously.

Hey, Wallace's body probably provided a lot of shade...
