Okay, how about this: they like gossiping about the TV characters with their real-life friends. The point is, series TV is character driven, often at the expense of plot. But I think women are OK with that. Let's try this out as a generalizaton: chicks prefer characters to plots, guys are more interested in plot mechanics than in character studies.

I think I agree with you about Burke. He seems more like what Doyle had in mind. Hardwicke plays Watson as a more developed character, with a lot of human depth and so forth . . . and he's almost unrecognizable from the stories.

Exactly. He just is there; and that's what Watson was...

I think that's a very good way to put it. Afro

Leone is the perfect filmmaker, combining plot and characters in perfect equilibrium, thus appealing to both guys and chicks.

Carpenter's The Thing  Cool

it's twelve angry men with a kick ass monster added in the mix

You could re-purpose the scenario with an all female cast (retitled Hen Party) and, with minor changes to the dialog, have pretty much the same film.
i liked to see them handle the thing  Cool

That would be cool. 12 kick-ass babes (a la Rose McGovern in Planet Terror) taking on the Thing from another world. A guns-and-ass extravaganza. Yeah, it could work.

Scary profound, Jenkins. I agree tenfold.

Chicks dig intellectual foreplay. And chick flicks are ripe with it. That's why if you take a woman to a chick flick, guys, it does all the work for you.

Two hours of tedium for 20 seconds of joy? Not really worth it, is it?

Taxi Driver
Kill Bill
Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia
Platoon

Rio Bravo by Howard Hawks has got to be one of the greatest guy movies ever made as far as I'm concerned, Big Sleep as well, and maybe Red River if it wasn't for the somewhat silly ending.

I also recently saw Shoot 'em Up, that is the testosteronest movie in recent memory, even more testosterony than the great Planet Terror wich mostly suffered from a rather lousy male lead.

I love Tommy Lee Jones's Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, I don't know if it qualifies as a guy's guy movie but it's some kind of guy movie....

I think A Bronx Tale (1993) deserves a mention - a very manly movie indeed.
