Mr. Savant's review is somewhat persuasive, but given the many flaws and issues he takes with the film (most of which I agree with) I don't see how he can give it an excellent rating. I guess it's all highly subjective.

The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964)  Some good scenes (the chariot race might even be preferable to Ben Hur's), well-directed and the score is good (Tiomkin utilizes even a tarantella rhythm!). But the plot is hackneyed, the actors miscast (I can just digest Loren because she's so gorgeous here: but her english delivery doesn't ring true) and at almost three hours r.t. very heavy to digest. 5\10
