Someone asked this over at the Imdb "Once Upon A Time In The West" board.

What is the Morse Code message comming over the telegraph at Cattle Corner Station?

In the internet age, such knowledge is superfluous: http://www.onlineconversion.com/morse_code.htm

 Afro

so all we need now is someone intrepid enough to count dot's dashes, and the pauses.

I bet it's just some gibberish with no sense, probably created by Morricone as part of the sound desing for the scene, but it would still be interesting to know.

so would that be:

-- ...- - - ...  - - ... --.-- .------ .-.--.- --- .- .-- - --.- --.-- -- .--.. .-

which would translate into:
MVTTS TTS--.--.------.-.--.-OAWTQ--.--M.--..A

so there are two most likely possibilities:

1) i misinterpreted those wavs (the most like of the 2 chances)

2) it doesn't really mean anything (also pretty likely)

the way i figure it is this:

longer wav's = --

shorter one= -

little blocks= .

a chiped wav= .-

it's not based on any sort of method, just a hunch as to how it might go Wink

It's perfect timing, large one...

Of course we are not hearing morse code in a pure form - the sound represents a telegraph machine
punching dots and dashes on ticker tape.

I think that's the most important point. It would take a very experienced person to recognize it from that, I suppose.
But it's really an interesting question.

BTW, long time ago I used to know Morse, though I was very slow. Not anymore. It's that sort of thing you learn in holiday camps and forget when you cease to use them... that's the case with me.
