I wonder if the archetypical proportions of Leone films are in direct relation to why we like the films so much.  I do think so.
After all, OUTIW deals with thematics that affects life the most


-Thanatos, fear of dying
      aging and becoming useless: Cheyenne
      being very physically ill: Morton

-Eros: Jill is the only (important) woman in this film

-Good vs. evil: Harmonica vs. Frank

-Power: Morton vs. Frank

-Childhood memories/traumas: Harmonica

-Loneliness: Harmonica
....

And so on...

Interesting points, of course Leone's magical style and Morrecones fantastic music  created what would have been meer melodrama in another's hands into Olympian Epics.
