Dir by Richard Wilson, with Robert Mitchum as town tamer Clint Tollinger  with a pretty good cast of recognizeable character actors and up and comming future stars:

 Jan Sterling ...  Nelly Bain
 Karen Sharpe ...  Stella Atkins
Henry Hull ...  Marshal Lee Sims
 Emile Meyer ...  Saul Atkins
 John Lupton ...  Jeff Castle
 Barbara Lawrence ...  Ann Wakefield
Ted de Corsia ...  'Frenchy' Lescaux (as Ted De Corsia)
 Leo Gordon ...  Ed Pinchot
James Westerfield ...  Mr. Zender (drummer)
 Jay Adler ...  Cal (uncredited)
Claude Akins ...  Jim Reedy (uncredited)
Florenz Ames ...  Doc Hughes (uncredited)
Joe Barry ...  Dade Holman (uncredited)
 Norma Calderón ...  Luz (uncredited)
Thom Conroy ...  Bill Emory (uncredited)
 Angie Dickinson ...  Kitty (uncredited)

Not a bad Western but also not great, its good, it suffers from being shot all on sets but that said it's definitely worth a look.

Tolliver is a gunfighter who has a rep as a "town tamer" running out rowdies, establishing curfews and posting "No Firearns" notices with the caveat that violators "will be shot".  He rides into Sheridan looking for his estrangled wife who runs a whorehouse, though they are called euphamistically "dance hall girls. The town of Sheridan hires him to clean out the town,  which he does to the detriment of some of the local buisnesses. Claud Akins has a memorable confrontation with Mitchum.

Thanks, CJ. I'll watch any film that has Barbara Lawrence in it.

Streaming video (with commercials): http://www.hulu.com/watch/39075/man-with-the-gun

UPDATE 5/14/09: I see that Hulu has taken the film down. Shame.

Stylish made 50s western with a tough Mitchum in one of his best roles. Rather violent for its time.

Thanks, Hulu, now I've seen this. A film with an impressive body count: the two brothers, Slim, Claude Akins, Ted de Corsia, Pinchot, and finally the fat man. That's 7, so this film gets a 7/10: what's a Western without killings? Barbara Lawrence looks great in this, too (though I prefer her avaricious and shrewd to avaricious and dumb). Hey, even Angie Dickinson has a bit in this. Maybe I should raise the rating? Nah, that ending sucks (why didn't the fat man bring his whole army to town as back up? Stupid!). Another great Mitchum performance, though.

Watched the dvd. The fat man could have brought his army (what was left of it) but then Mitchum would have gone hip to the plot. The fat man just didn't belong there. Actually I thought Westerfield was a hired killer who would shoot Mitchum from a window of a near building. To think INSTEAD that the man deputized to kill him could be able to just because Mitchum would kneel himself didn't square with what we had seen him do up to that moment, expecially when the same gunman in the earlier confrontation had seen how Mitchum was ambidexterous. But I disagree with CJ: I don't like open spaces, I prefer the town-bound, all-confrontations western: Fistful, High Noon, Warlock. 8\10

That explains why you don't care for GBU.

GBU is clearly the leaner, meaner version. Making it the best of the two.

GBU is not anchored geographically, thus, for titoli, a lesser film. BBC, by contrast, is made up of several town-based vignettes, set in a succession of villages manque, and tentatively linked by the frequent wanderings of the peripatetic main characters.

Consider the sites where much of the action unfolds: Stevensville, Ropeburn, TX, Sand Dune, NM. Sentenza rides into Ruined Confederate Fort for a brief encounter with its inhabitants and has an epiphany. Betterville, the dystopia that travelers must leave to survive, is the scene of both a reunion and an escape. Ft. Smith has been transformed into Killing Floor, AK, a metaphor for Life itself. At Bridgetown our heroes witness a community divided, where strife can only end by crossing Jordan. Finally, there is the final reckoning, at Sad Hill, that great City of the Dead. A song is played, a dance performed. Our modern Candides, Blondie and Tuco, then move on, but Sentenza remains, home at last.
