hi titoli and guys,

lately my research into classical music has led me to j. rodrigo.
yes, the now famous concierto de aranjuez.
the second movement, which even Miles Davis has covered successfully is the case in point.

the colors used here and some of the melodic elements are very close to EM's work in SL's movies.
basically, it's the other way around, as rodrigo's piece was made in 1938-9.
i'm sure EM would have heard this as a student.
the element that clearly stand out as similar are the flamenco style guitar and the cor anglais (alto oboe).
i don't think EM stole from JR but i DO think he was heavily influenced by this concerto.
especially in the more moody cue in SL's westerns.

What a coincidence, man!  I reviewed "Sketches of Spain" in the "Rate the Last CD" thread a few months ago, and I'm pretty sure I also mentioned how Concierto de Aranjuez reminded me of Morricone.  I still haven't heard the original, but Gil Evans is a pretty brilliant arranger and I'm sure he did it justice.

archangel, as i pointed out in another post, M. delighted in taking inspiration from other great musicians works and never denied it. If you look up my post on his arrangements you will see that, f.e., his arrangement of Miranda Martino's neapolitan song "dringhete ndrÓ" is clearly inspired by Ravel's Mother Goose.  In other Martino's arrangements he quoted a lot of classical musicians' orchestrations, sometime even quoting more directly like Beethoven's slow movement arpeggios of Moonlight's sonata. Anyway I'll check the Rodrigo.

yep,
Paco my fave too, for heaps of stuff.
apparently Paco can't read music, and was apprehensive about performing the work.
however, after he did, J Rodrigo heard it and said it was the closest to the way he first heard it when writing it.
other guitarists use classical axes, but Paco uses a flamenco axe.
totally different in tone, and more accurate for this.

Yes, that is true that he can not read music.  Here's a quote from him:

"First of all, I'm not a 'musician' in the usual sense.  I don't know the names of the chords and the scales, and I don't know how to read or write music.  I just play what I feel intuitively, and what my ears say is nice or not.  Flamenco is an oral tradition, and I am myself because I am flamenco.  When I try to play other types of music I usually get a little bit lost."

I find that last part very interesting since he was certainly able to hold his own when he played with John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola in the Guitar Trio.
