Recent remakes have hit an all time low...

Without Englund there is just no point.

why wouldn't englund be involved? is he too freakin' busy or something? Wtf?

Englund IS Nightmare. who the hell are you going to get to play the part?

And why remake it? Whats the point of toying with an 8 film franchise when you're only gonna remake the original? Is it confusing to the audience? Covering an origin story is something you can cover in about 2 minutes tops. Hell you could even cover it in a credits montage.

I'm not a fan of the series (i was entertained by 1 and 3) but this just reeks of stupid, from all angles. Financially and creativly.

1, 3 and 4 are the only ones that hold any value in the series.
I forget everything else exists, thus making it a solid trilogy.
Craven's New Nightmare had a neat concept but it was executed horribly.

EDIT: Oh, and Freddy versus Jason was kinda fun too, but I don't consider it canon.

Englund can always play some corpse in the remake.

It's a remake, not a sequel, so why would you expect them to star the original Freddie Krueger?

Because he looks scarier now than he looked then.

Well, I've never really cared for slasher films at all - most of them are actually pretty darn funny, in what I'll assume is an unintentional way. Just about the only one I've liked is Deep Red.

I still don't get why people are complaining about lack of Robert Englund. I re-iterate: it's a REMAKE, not a SEQUEL. If you're going to create a new franchise, it wouldn't make sense to have the same star as the original.

1. Because this is a stupid idea in the first place

2. If they are using the original main theme (they are) for this remake, why not use Englund?
Using the original theme says to me that they are doing a re-vamp, not a remake.

3. Kane Hodder is returning as Jason for the REMAKE of Friday the 13th (a series I don't care for). What's the difference?
That he wears a mask?

4. Get poor Englund. That guy has to appear at endless amounts of comic-cons and horror festivals in order to make a living.

Well, the screenwriter for the remake is the pen and inker that gave us Doom, so I fully expect this to deliver the goods.

Oh, and Michael Bay is involved.

...ouch.

Claudia, we need you to appear in LOST COMMAND. It's gonna revolutionize the war genre. What did you think of the script?

Did the recent remake of Halloween have the original Michael Myers in it? Did 300 star Richard Egan? Where were Omar Sharif and Julie Christie for the Masterpiece Theatre version of Doctor Zhivago? Was Toshiro Mifune anywhere to be found A Fistful of Dollars or The Magnificent Seven? Did Janet Leigh play Marion Crane in the Van Sant Psycho? Edward Woodward didn't star in the remake of The Wicker Man, did he?

The fact that you found the one exception to the rule proves nothing. Remakes NEVER star the stars of the original - cameos, at most. Why? Because they're generally a different film entirely. That, and there'd be little point other than to placate the fanboys. If a remake's gonna suck, it doesn't matter who's in it.

I'll add as a post-script, that I find it amusing that you're using Kane Hodder as a counter-example, especially considering that he WASN'T the first Jason, and was one of several actors to play the part. That's not really conducive to your argument.

Completely off-topic with nothing at all to do with Nightmare on Elm Street, but that is an awesome idea.  Bye-bye Bucholz, hello Mifune! Grin

Heh, is this true? I know he starred in quite a few baddies, but is he really doing that bad?

BTW, FC, you should know this; how was the TV series with Freddy? What do you think of it?

Where were Omar Sharif and Julie Christie for the Masterpiece Theatre version of Doctor Zhivago?

Why would they have them play the same characters?
They would be way too old.
We are talking about the 2002 remake? Correct?

Was Toshiro Mifune anywhere to be found A Fistful of Dollars or The Magnificent Seven?

Leone made FOD under Kurosawa's nose, of course he wouldn't cast Mifune. Nevermind the simple fact that a Japanese cowboy would have been totally out of place in leone's western.
The Japanese cowboy thing applies with MM. It wouldn't fly.

Did Janet Leigh play Marion Crane in the Van Sant Psycho?

Now your just being a silly dinkles Cheesy
Why would Gus Van Sant cast a wrinkly old timer to take off her close during the shot for shot remake of the infamous shower scene from the original?
Why did he get Anne Heche? I don't know. But she was at least easier on the eyes than Leigh was at the time.
And why was this thing filmed in the first place?

The old factor applies to WM as well.
It would be stupid. These actors cannot play the same characters from the original in a remake made 30 to 40 years later.

However, Robert Englund can STILL play Freddy.
His age can easily be hidden in the make up (see F versus J) and he still has the energy to pull off the role.
If they don't want to go the comical route anymore, fine (I don't either), let Englund play Freddy straight. Like in the first flick.

TUCO: No, my last reason was more of a joke but I haven't seen him in much of anything except for the occasional straight to video horror film.
