Mad Max: Fury Road - 7.5/10
Like Road Warrior with the style maximized and the heart bumped up a bit, but not to a distracting level. Probably still a little too long but I really appreciate it's craft.

Roy, you seem polite, I suspect your rates would have been around 1.5 point  lower if only you didn't announce how much you wanted to see the original MM movies. So let me alleviate your pain: they are cult classics, but they are far from great movies.

Definitely too many.
But here is something about these movies: they're loved first and mainly for their universe/set design. If you just think the costumes, props and sets of MM2 are ok/well done but don't feel the love for this steampunk stuff, you will never love a Mad Max movie. It just strikes something in me (and I'm not a cars or motorcycles guy), while you all probably live in a very dark place and are sad people but that's none of my business. Go on criticizing Little Big Man and When Eagles Dare while I'm busy being happy.

We ALL live in a place like that my friend, and it's much worse than the romantic exaggerated world of MM. It's just that, some of us - like you - are much easier to fool. For which I envy you.

Cleopatra - 2/10 - Probably the longest bad movie ever made. The filmmakers try mixing Shakespeare and Shaw's Cleopatra plays while removing the former's language and the latter's intricate characterizations. What's left is four hours of tedium weighed down by ponderous spectacle. Liz Taylor is really pretty but pretty terrible; Richard Burton is stuck in declamatory ham mode. All the worthwhile stuff involves Rex Harrison as Caesar; once he dies (about 90 minutes in) the picture loses any interest.

Yep, sorry, I often make the mistake because of the French title: Quand les Aigles attaquent" (when eagles attack).

They just tried to shoot Richard Burton 20 million times. It was all lost bullets.

That's why Where Eagles Bore is such an idiotic film: no one who is really sober tries to shoot Dick Burton. With such an insane premise a film is hopelessly muddled from the beginning on.

Funny story about that shoot of Where Eagles Dare (I don't recall where I read it): Burton would often knock back a drink or three during the shoot. So when they are by the scene where Burton & Eastwood are setting the explosive booby trap on the road, Burton was pretty trashed, but Brian Hutton figures, hey, Burton can just get out of the car and set the explosive (just a stick of balsa wood, of course), no big deal, right?

So Hutton tells Burton: Okay, now you get out of the car, you set the explosive, and then you run back into the car.
So Burton replies: I don't handle explosives.
So Hutton tries explaining that it's not real explosives, just balsa wood painted to look like explosives, but Burton was having none of it. Refused to touch it.

So a little while later, Hutton walks over to Burton and says: Okay, so now we are going to do a scene: you walk out of the car, set the balsa wood, and then go back into the car.
Burton had no problem doing that.

Dude, when you are sober, would you shoot Burton? He was a cool guy. Nazis are still human beings. I mean, say what you want about the tenets of National Socialism, Dude, at least it's an ethos.
Also, don't forget it was established early in the movie that most of the german soldiers spend their time drinking beer at the restaurant outside of the castle.

No, they use ice axes. It worked for Alain Delon, it almost worked for the bad guy here.

Funny, Richard Schickel almost said the same thing in his book on Eastwood.(In fact, now I remember, I am pretty sure that that book is also where I read that story about the drunk Burton refusing to set the "explosives.")  And he was serious about it. When writing about how these few Americans manage to kill about a zillion Germans without getting a scratch themselves, Schickel says something like, well, don't these German soldiers have mothers, too, Weren't they drafted into their army, too, Are we supposed to want so many of them to die, aren't they human beings ...
