Brief Encounter (1945) - 7.5/10
A simple story mixed with a unique structure and narrative. Very good and ultimately thought-provoking.

Brazil (1985) - 6.5/10
Good

Time Bandits (1981) - 7/10
Good

Voyage of Time (2016) - 9.5/10
The 90-minute cut. Absolutely phenomenal. It's a travesty about the marketing and distribution on this one, as I feel it truly could be a great success given the popularity of stuff like Planet Earth. This is an artsier take on it. I've never seen images so beautiful. Terrence Malick, tell these SLWB-haters to fuck off!

Charley Varrick (1973): Walter Matthau and Andrew Robinson rob a small bank, not knowing it's used by the mafia, who send Joe Don Baker to retrieve the money. Good shit. 8/10

Watched this on the new UK blu-ray.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) - 9/10. Martin McDonagh finally directs a real movie! Yay! This one has real characters, and you can tell they're real because they're capable of change. Frances McDormand is on her way to another Oscar nom. Woody Harrelson is beyond amazing; Sam Rockwell shows what he really can do. And all the secondary characters are so well cast it's frightening. This film uses flashbacks better than just about any film I can think of in the last decade-and-a-half. Some of the plotting is off, though: for example, a cop goes rogue and throws a citizen out a window and all he gets is the loss of his job. No criminal penalties? No civil penalties? There should have been something in the script to answer such questions. On the other hand, the several twists and reversals in the story work well. It all maybe goes a little long at the end, but I really enjoyed this piece.
Still like this one, and now it's out on Blu, which includes some deleted scenes, a Making Of, and McDonagh's first short, "Six Shooter" (w/Brendan Gleeson). I noticed this time through that the absence of people recording things with their phones and refusal to use email (one character writes 3 letters by hand) gave the piece kind of a weird period feel.

May have to purchase this one.

Sonatine (1993) - 9/10. My second-favorite Yakuza film, now out on Blu in Japan with an excellent transfer. Kitano seems to be going for a Jarmusch-meets-McDonagh thing, only no one knew who McDonagh was in 1993. Still, this would make an excellent double bill with In Bruges.
