btw, this was a milestone of sorts for me; it was the 100th Western I have seen. Here's the list. Lemme know what i'm missing

About 200 or 300 other westerns. But you are on your way

How do you know that wasn't the OAR? Not all movies were shot in widescreen back in the day.

I think, but I'm not 100 % sure that from the mid-50s onwards every film which wasn't shot in anamorphic widescreen was intended to be shown in 1,85:1 in the theatres.

But films like the Hanging Tree are normally not pan-and-scanned for a 4:3 showing, cause they can simply show the complete image without the 1,85:1 masking (aka open matte).

The glance that makes holes in the silver screen

« #9647 : October 30, 2011, 02:40:08 AM »

Spent some bro time with my younger brother:

Hot Fuzz (2007) - 8/10
Maybe even 8.5/10, but I was kinda disappointed by the run of the mill shaky-cam action scenes. Some cool stunts and choreographies were ruined by it, but I understand that it's a kind of spoof movie, so the style goes with the genre...

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
One of my favorite films of all time but slightly wrong choice for the event.

Johnny English Reborn (2011) - 6/10
High production values don't make a good comedy. It's a mildly entertaining hour and a half - but haven't we had enough of spy film parodies already?

Hard-Boiled (1992) - 8.5/10
Best Woo.

Death Wish - 5/10 - There's something to be said about watching Charles Bronson shoot muggers, but the movie is so strident in its pro-vigilante rhetoric it's impossible to take it seriously. I remember seeing the first sequel on TV, which struck me as being even worse.

Congrats DD. O0 I don't know how many Westerns I've actually seen (God knows how many I saw on TV as a kid) but I'm fast approaching 100 reviews on my blog.

Rio Lobo - 5/10 - 3rd or 4th viewing. Not sure what more can be said about it than has already been said: it's bookended by two great sequences and the middle is tedious filler.

True. But he final shot is one of the great payoffs in all of cinema.

Not a bad idea. O0

Fun fact: I live about 10-15 miles from where Charles Bronson grew up.

Ehrenfeld is on my way to and from work. I've never been but I could probably swing by for laughs sometime.

no doubt. but there's hardly been any shit posted in any other thread over the past few months.

IMO we gotta start posting more heavily in each film's thread every time we watch a film, rather than just a one-and-done in this thread  :)
