Every noir could be grouped in a more apporopiate (sub) category: suspense, crime, gangster, PI, etc. but I thought that was common knowledge. It's a style, therefore it exists.

Claudia, we need you to appear in LOST COMMAND. It's gonna revolutionize the war genre. What did you think of the script?

Won't do any good. They've seen it on the lists, so that's that. If you really want to get a rise out of them, tell them there really isn't any such thing as film noir.
Well, the subject of discussion was whether it fell into the category of film noir or melodrama (if that constitutes a genre either). There were a few people who agreed with me, but most of them thought it was noir because there was a crime/investigation and use of style devices, like dark/expressive cinematography, use of flashbacks/narration, etc. I cited Brief Encounter (and the previous films in the class, for that matter) as a counter-example, but no luck.

Double Indemnity
- 8/10 - This is definitely a noir if such a genre does indeed exist.

The Guns of Navarone
- 9/10 - Fourth viewing. That's an unusually large number of films for me in the last week.

i think it was, or its possible i was confusing it with my own rating (8.5). i tried searching it but the search engine is rather stingy. either way it's still a great movie, definitly one of my fav's in the "crack squadren face impossible challenge" niche of the action genre.

I may have rated it lower, but my sentiment remains the same regardless.

In the Mood For Love
-
Imdb plot summary:
A man and a woman move in to neighboring Hong Kong apartments and form a bond when they both suspect their spouses of extra-marital activities
2nd viewing. I think this is a wonderful movie and it stirs up a lot of emotions, something that only a few movies have been doing for me lately. The visuals are stunning. One of the most interesting things about this movie is that most of the time these kind of stories are about the people who are
actually
cheating on their spouses, but these two aren't really doing anything wrong, they're the victims in this situation; yet they feel guilty for seeing each other, even though they're not lovers, physically that is, because of 'what the neighbors might think', literally in this case.
Another thing I noticed on second viewing that I didn't notice the first time around is that you almost never see the face of anyone but the two main characters, maybe because they are constantly being watched by everyone else, in a sense every person in the movie except for Mr. Chow and Mrs. Chan are
us
the audience watching the film. Even when they are by themselves, away from the neighbors, the camera is placed behind a door or something that gives the feeling that they are being watched and they seem to be aware of it.
I think I'm starting to ramble. the picture below demonstrates what I'm trying to say better than I ever could. Definately check this movie out.
I also saw two other movies by the guy who made this movie, Wong Kar Wai is his name, recently; Chungking Express and Fallen Angels, both of wich I adored especially the latter. I'll write more about them later.
Wong Kar Wai rules

Chungking Express is my favorite by WKW but everything I've seen from him has been incredibly impressive: As Tears Go By, 2046, Fallen Angels, In the Mood For Love, Happy Together and Days of Being Wild.

WALL·E (2008)
- 9(.5)/10
The best movie of the year*. Suck on that!
*Frankly, I've seen only four other movies from 2008. This year seems lame after the last two, this far; I hope there are some good movies still to come.

I only managed to see a couple scenes on tcm, but decided to stop watching because i came in during the middle and stopped because i would rather watch it from beginning to end. All buy the dvd if i come across it, though.

Where Eagles Dare is a fun movie, but I should warn it's a lot more cartoonish than Guns of Navarone. It don't even try to be serious or realistic, and can be seen very much as a forerunner to Raiders of the Lost Ark in that regard.

In fact, if it were a style then
Citizen Kane
and
Casablanca
would be considered noirs; they aren't, although they share many of the hallmarks of the so-called noir style. Clearly, noir isn't a style, and it isn't a genre. In fact, it just isn't.
