A Scanner Darkly - It put me to sleep twice.  4\10
It's a language-heavy movie. Maybe having to read all those subtitles did you in?

Fort Apache - 8/10 - 2nd viewing. Has a bit too much of the Ford humor but is Ford at his best 90% of the time. Plus I appreciated how sympathetic the movie is to the Apaches this time around.

Also watched the Sun Bowl this afternoon unfortunately. 3-0!?! Worst football game ever, and I need to punch Bill Stull in the face when I get back to Pitt (and then run Wanstedt out of town on a rail).

Laitakaupungin valot (2006) "Lights in the Dusk" - 8/10
Aki Kaurismäki's latest is relatively humorless and otherwise darker than The Man Without a Past, closer to The Match Factory Girl.

1. The Dark Knight (9.5/10)
2. The Wrestler (9/10)
3. Revolutionary Road (9/10)
4. Man on Wire (8/10)
5. Slumdog Millionaire (8/10)
6. Shine a Light (8/10)
7. Iron Man (7/10)
8. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (6.5/10)
9. Tropic Thunder (6.5/10)
10. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (5/10)
11. Hancock (5/10)
12. Rambo (4/10)
13. Jumper (2.5/10)

Buchanan Rides Alone (1958) I'll give this Boetticher effort a 7/10, it was entertaining.

RR's watched about as many movies in the last week as I've seen all year. Sad Although his list is largely at variance with mine.

I like to read subtitles. I'm a fast reader and I like to hear the intonations and pronunciations from native speakers, not only english ones, before they speak the lines. But I wonder if people watching this without subtitles' aid were more bored than me. Reading some negative reviews at IMDB makes me think they were and even makes me presume that some of the going nowhere speeches (which constitute the backbone of the movie) were not followed completely. This movie is based on the gimmick of the cartoons drawn on the living figures, exciting the first 5-10 minutes and then boring as hell. Why they didn't alternate between the two styles (as it should have been logical: for example, the close-ups of Reeves' face inside the gyro-something) still evades me. Maybe a second vision would help appreciate it more, but I'd rather re-read the novel (of which, honest, I remember only the dedication quoted at the end of the movie).

Nah, the only ones I've watched since I made the list are the ones I noted of/rated/reviewed. I just added a few to the list that I had previously seen in '08 but forgot about.

What site are you getting downloads from RR? I'm going to be penny-penching through January so I may have to take advantage of that myself...

Dark Portals: The Chronicles of Vidocq A good way to start a new year. Very excellent thriller set in 1830 Paris. Nothing is original (expecially the finale) but everything is done with the right tempo and the visuals are enticing. 8\10

Brazil (1985) - 8/10
Some of the sets and effects (actually quite a deal of them) looked dated and cheap but aside from that it was really good. I didn't understand it perfectly but enjoyed it nevertheless. A great nightmare Afro Apparently they showed the original, not the director's cut in case that makes any difference.

EDIT: Or then it was the director's cut, I don't know. I read a few synopsis on the net and nothing was missing...

The Wrestler - 9/10
Watched it again, this time without interruptions and on a bigger screen. Even better this time. Even my friends liked it a lot.

Pi - 7.5/10
Really interesting debut from Aronofsky. The guy has talent. Not as good as Requiem or especially the Wrestler but still pretty good.

Rocky - 7/10 - I decided to watch it because it was on AMC since amazingly I hadn't seen it before. Pretty good for what it is, though I wouldn't call it a truly great film. Stallone wasn't bad, although Talia Shire is pretty annoying. Fight scenes were pretty good and direction was adequate. It was entertaining enough to hold my interest.

The Train - 9/10 - 3rd viewing.
